Venepuncture Training


Our phlebotomy venepuncture training course is aimed at any healthcare worker whose responsibilities comprise of taking blood and can also be beneficial to those looking to advance their venepuncture skillset.

Delegates will gain theoretical knowledge of venepuncture by discussing topics such as the anatomy of veins, select a suitable site and the correct order of draw. A practical session will allow the delegates to practice venepuncture on a synthetic arm.



Venepuncture Training

During the practical session, the delegate will:


Learn how to identify the suitable veins for Venepuncture

Learn how to identify the indications and contraindications for both the practitioner and the patient

Discuss the equipment used for performing Venepuncture

Made aware of the full procedure and raise awareness for potential policy variations

Practice in a controlled environment to help develop Venepuncture skills

Consider Venepuncture from patients point of view

The main aims of the courses are to provide:


Define Venepuncture

Identify roles and responsibilities, relevant to the area of work and Venepuncture

Discuss accountability and consent

Label anatomy of vein assess and select suitable sites for Venepuncture and sites to be avoided

Describe scenarios when not to take blood

Discuss and practise skills such as timing, using less dominant hand, tourniquet usage and also angles of needle

List equipment required for Venepuncture

Explain order of draw and it’s importance

Discuss and list labelling a sample accurately

Identify relevant polices and procedures to area of work

Breakdown the potential complications associated with Venepuncture and discuss appropriate actions to prevent and/or treat common errors, complications and problems you may encounter

Outline basic first aid in relation to Phlebotomy

Review the full procedure

Practice by using a simulation arm

Reflective piece based on Venepuncture experience – seeing it from patients point of view

We provide the delegate with an activity book and a reflection template for working in, taking notes, for revalidation and competency sign off in their workplace.


Delegates who complete this training course will have gained increased understanding of issues surrounding venepuncture such as procedures, issues and accurate handle and labelling of samples as well as being able to correctly draw blood.

Delegates will have carried out practical exercises on prosthetic arms and anatomical models.


The course lasts approx 3 hours


You will receive a certificate of attendance which is valid for 12 months.

Trainer resource pack will be an excellent support to a trainer who facilitates training in house. The Trainer pack containers everything you will need to begin you own in-house training. You will be able to adapt and edit the resource pack to make it more bespoke to your area of work and this will assist delegates to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Train the Trainer

Pre-course material will be sent out 1 month before course date.

Within this material delegates will be expected to of completed necessary sections to participate within the course. The portfolio of evidence will be built up before, during and after the course. A micro teach will be filmed on the last day. Peer and self-assessments will be part of the assessment process. Reflective diary and action plan. The portfolio of evidence can be handed in up to 6 months after the final day of the course.

The portfolio will be both subject and training evidence.

Face to Face – The coursework must be completed before the assessment day. A final copy can be submitted after training. Assessment is role play, discussion, microteach, coursework. Certificate is valid for 3 years.

Distance – Support via email/calls with a clinical trainer through-out your study time and afterwards. Assessment is coursework and video microteach. Certificate is valid for 3 years
